Makaśa Looking Horse

Makasa Looking Horse was born on Six Nations territory, and her name translates to ‘Red Earth’ in her Lakota language. Her nations are Mohawk, wolf clan, and Lakota from Cheyenne River Reservation. She has been trained since a very young age in Indigenous ways of knowing and being. Ms. Looking Horse has completed Rites of Passage through both Lakota and Mohawk ceremonies known as Ishnati and Ohero:kon. She has been a Sundance Leader for women the past 13 years and is also a Youth Leader at Six Nations for water protection and security during which she has organized many community actions and events. Makasa was awarded 2023 Community Scholar Eihwadei/Yerihwayente:r by her community at Six Nations Polytechnic for her dedication to culture, and community work. She has a degree in Indigenous Studies at McMaster University and is the the Traditional Ecological Knowledge Community navigator for the Global Center for Climate Change and Transboundary Waters partnered with Six Nations Polytechnic on Six Nations Territory.
